The following lists of products are recommended for those with truly sensitive or rosacea-afflicted skin based on one primary criteria: they do not contain ingredients known to be irritating or especially problematic for sensitive skin or rosacea. That means none of these products contain fragrance or any kind, including essential oils and none of them feature inordinately long ingredient lists (which increases the odds that your skin will suffer a negative reaction). Please be aware that even with careful consideration and adherence to usage guidelines we cannot guarantee these products will not cause problems for your sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. No product or product line can make this guarantee (at least not honestly) because of the many variables that can conspire to cause your skin to have a sensitized reaction. Rosacea, in particular, is a disorder that may cause a person’s skin to flare with minimal provocation, or from even the most benign cosmetic ingredients, climate changes, hormonal fluctuation, and stress.
The goal of this list is to make it easier for persons with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin to find products that may work for them without making matters worse. Please know that managing rosacea requires the care and supervision of a physician along with careful use of skin-care products and avoidance of external triggers that worsen this condition. If you experience a lingering reaction to any skin-care product, including those from the list below, discontinue use and consult your physician for advice.
Note: Unlike the other products that comprise the various “Best” lists, not all of the products below received a Paula’s Pick rating. This was typically due to packaging concerns, but that doesn’t change the fact that the formula itself is suitable for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.
Second note: Beyond foundations, there are no other listings for best makeup products for those with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. That’s because, generally speaking, makeup tends to contain far fewer potential irritants and typically omits fragrance. Another reason is that some persons with sensitive skin react to various pigments in makeup. In those cases, careful avoidance is mandatory. Otherwise, please refer to the main Best Products list for a selection of the top-rated concealers, powders, blush, eyeshadow, mascara, and so on.

Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel, for All Skin Types
have made in terms of the bevy of sophisticated ingredients they contain. Most of these ingredients have substantiated research proving their benefit for skin of all ages. And many serums have a texture that is suitable for oily or breakout-prone skin. As such, serums can be a brilliant way for those with this skin type and/or condition to obtain the benefits of antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients, including retinol (serums containing an impressive amount of retinol in stable packaging are listed separately).
You will notice that the longer list of serums is on the expensive side. I wish this weren’t the case, but it is. There are two reasons. One is that most cosmetics companies position serums as specialty or targeted products, almost always with an anti-aging angle. Therefore, as the perceived (or the claimed) benefits increase, so does the price. Second, and the more real-world reason for the high prices, is that it is expensive to create serums (most are non-aqueous, and water is the least expensive yet most pervasive skin-care ingredient around) that contain the level and range of state-of-the-art ingredients noted in the products below. The cost of several of the ingredients in these serums is, on a pound-for-pound basis, staggering when compared to the cost of ubiquitous ingredients such as triglycerides, glycerin, or mineral oil. Although most of the best serums are costly, at least you know you’re getting an intelligently formulated product whose ingredients have a proven track record of improving skin’s health and appearance. Just as with the best moisturizers, please refer to each serum’s individual review for an assessment of the claims and information on formulary specifics, such as whether or not it is fragrance-free and, in some cases, comparisons with less expensive options.

The products listed below either contain the time-proven, safe skin-lightening agent hydroquinone or they contain ingredients related to it, such as arbutin or other agents that research (however limited) has shown hold some promise for lightening sun- or hormone-induced brown skin discolorations. Some of these skin-lightening products also contain an AHA or BHA at the correct pH for exfoliation to occur. The synergistic combination of hydroquinone and a chemical exfoliant not only allows the hydroquinone to work better but also helps remove layers of uneven, sun-damaged skin (and those with BHA can help keep breakouts and blackheads at bay).
Hydroquinone has become a controversial ingredient, despite considerable research demonstrating its safety when properly formulated (meaning following over-the-counter guidelines rather than adulterating products with compounds that can cause skin problems). For detailed information about this "gold standard" skin-lightening agent, please refer to the Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary from the Home page of this site. Over-the-counter hydroquinone products are available in strengths of 1% to 2%; higher concentrations are available from dermatologists and plastic surgeons (e.g., Tri-Luma, listed below). Keep in mind that no skin-lightening product will work if you don't use an effective sunscreen daily. Also, if you're using any over-the-counter product with hydroquinone and you haven't noticed any skin-lightening results after three months of daily use (plus daily use of a well-formulated sunscreen rated SPF 15 or greater), you should discontinue use. If this occurs, it is very likely that, for whatever reason, over-the-counter strengths of hydroquinone are not going to be effective for you.
Following is a list of miscellaneous products that have interesting effects, are available by prescription only (yet definitely worth considering if their pharmacologic action applies to your needs), or have an intriguing premise that just doesn’t fit squarely into the major categories. For details about these products, please refer to the individual reviews on this site. Note that we also include wrinkle fillers on this list, because a few of those products are impressive to the extent that cosmetic ingredients allow. None of the wrinkle fillers recommended last all day or are going to make a women in her 50s look like she's in her 20s, but they can help and the best ones treat skin to a range of beneficial ingredients.
Many, if not most, of the changes that take place on our skin over the years, such as wrinkles, skin discolorations, loss of elasticity, texture problems, and dryness, are the result of sun damage from exposure to the sun without appropriate or adequate sun protection. Sunscreens are essential for skin care day in and day out, 365 days a year. If applied correctly (meaning liberally and reapplied as often as needed), they are the only true antiwrinkle product. They can also potentially help prevent some forms of skin cancer and are an absolute must if you have already been treated for any type of skin cancer (or have a family history of it). If you are not using a sunscreen of some kind (lotion, cream, gel, serum, or foundation with sunscreen) with SPF 15 or greater and that contains the UVA-protecting ingredients of avobenzone, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, Mexoryl SX, or, outside the United States, Tinosorb, then you are doing nothing of value for the long-term health of your skin. Really, all of the antiwrinkle, firming, anti-aging, or rejuvenating products in the world are completely and totally useless if you are not protecting your skin from the sun every day. It is of vital importance to the health of your skin to include a well-formulated sunscreen in your daily skin-care routine. Arguably, the most unethical thing the cosmetics industry does is sell women a plethora of antiwrinkle products that more often than not do not include reliable sun protection.
I am pleased that in the last few years many cosmetics chemists have created lightweight sunscreens whose texture and typically smooth matte finish are just what someone struggling with oily skin or oily areas needs. This is one area of skin care that is becoming less difficult for someone with oily skin, but it still takes experimentation to figure out what product with sunscreen works best for you. Those dealing with breakout-prone skin should consider sunscreens reviewed as best for normal to slightly dry or oily/combination skin. Keep in mind that despite non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic claims made on labels, no sunscreen is guaranteed to be problem-free for someone struggling with acne.
All of the following sunscreens were rated Paula’s Picks for two important reasons. One, each has an SPF 15 or greater and includes avobenzone, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, Mexoryl SX, or Tinosorb (the latter approved for use outside the United States) as one or more of the active ingredients (if these are listed someplace else on the ingredient list, it does not count toward reliable sun protection). Avobenzone may be listed on an ingredient label by its chemical name, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, and Mexoryl SX may be listed as ecamsule.
Looking for the best water-resistant sunscreens? These are grouped in a separate Best Products list.

There are far more similarities than differences among toners. Almost without exception, the majority of toners either are boring concoctions of water and glycerin or contain irritating ingredients such as alcohol, witch hazel, and menthol. The small selection of toners below are only those with truly state-of-the-art formulations. The companies that make these products endeavored to create toners that go beyond just softening skin and/or removing the last traces of makeup. Recognizing that a well-formulated toner can be an integral part of one’s skin-care routine, the options below supply skin with antioxidants, innovative water-binding agents, and/or cell-communicating ingredients—all essential elements for creating and maintaining healthy, radiant skin.

Состав: Water, Stearic/Palmatic acid, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Glycerin, Titanium Dioxide, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (ProVitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (ProVitamin E), Pyridoxine hydrochloride (ProVitamin B6), Octyl Methoxy, Cinnamate, Butil Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Allantoin, Isopropyl Myristate, Potassium stearate/palmitate, Cetyl alcohol, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Desodium EDTA, Perfume.
Состав: Mineral Oil, Isopropyl Myristate, Grape seed Extract, Vitamin E, AloeVera Gel, Mushroom extract (?), Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Lactic Acid, Glycerine BP, Titanium Dioxide, Ceteareth-6, Ceteareth-25, Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Fragrance, Putified Water.

We are pleased to announce that Beautypedia is now available to you for free! You do not need to take steps to renew or cancel your subscription. Your credit card will not be charged again, even if your subscription is set to automatically renew.
Select countries now have free access to Beautypedia because of a new agreement with some of our official international Paula's Choice distributors. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions. And be sure to tell your neighbors that they can now enjoy Beautypedia for free!
Thank you,
